Carpets are a versatile floorcovering and there are types for every room in the house. Carpeting is a large part of the expense of decorating so it is important to pick a type that will be hardwearing and practical in the room where it is to be laid.
Because any all-over floorcovering can dominate the decoration in a room, it is best to avoid over-bold patterns and use more traditional patterns and quiet colours that will blend more with other decorations. An expanse of neutral colour can make a room appear more spacious. Rich, dark colours and bold patterns have the opposite effect. They make rooms feel smaller and cosier. A high ceiling will appear lower if the carpet and ceiling are dark and the walls are light. A low ceiling can seem higher if it is a slightly lighter shade than a carpet of the same colour.
Plain carpets, especially in light colours show stains far more than patterned carpets. A patterned carpet is therefore a good choice for a hallway and for a much used living room. An easily cleaned floorcovering is essential in these areas.
