The thickness and weight of a wallpaper is usually an indication of its quality. The thicker, heavier papers are the easiest to handle and are useful for concealing blemishes and minor defects in a wall. Thinner and cheaper papers stretch, fade and tear more easily than good quality ones, so always buy the best that you can afford. It will be cheaper in the long term.

Most wallpaper is machine-printed. Cheaper papers have the design printed directly on to the paper, but with better quality paper the surface is first covered with a solid colour before the pattern is overprinted.

Hand-printed papers produced by block, screen or stencil printing are more expensive, but the quality of printing is superior and the design likely to be exclusive. There are also textured papers with a pattern embossed into the paper during manufacture, flock papers which have a velvety pile and woodchip paper which has bits of sawdust and wood applied to the pulp during manufacture. These papers are hung over lining paper using heavy duty paste. Be careful not to flatten the texture while hanging and do not roll the seams.
